The Upper Manya Krobo District Directorate of Education with funding support from the Korea International Cooperation, KOICA, a non-governmental organization established by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Korea, as part of its campaign to promote the interest of girls in math and science related courses, has organized a four day Math and Science Camp for Junior High School Girls in the Upper Manya Krobo District of the Eastern Region.
The project on the theme, “Promotion of Girls Competency in Math and Science With Gender-Responsive Pedagogy”, had two hundred and thirty participants, with five pupils each from 46 Junior High Schools in the district.
The girls, during the course of the project were trained on how to write good reports, how to develop effective studying skills, and how to develop positive relationships with people who can help them improve upon their academics.
Facilitators took the girls through Math and Science topics including perimeter of a rectangle, area of a triangle, volume of a cuboid, and basic electronics.
The girls also embarked on an educational trip to the Asesewa Government Hospital, where they were given lessons on the functions of an x-ray machine.
In a ceremony to mark the end of the project, the Guest Speaker, Miss Abigail Tamakloe who is the General Nurse at the Asesewa Government Hospital, advised the participants to stay focused and learn hard.
She stressed on the need for the girls to forgo things that serve as distractions to their academics. She added that, it is easier for one to get a job when they study science as it provides one with a variety of career options.
The District Director of Education, Madam Grace Adza-Awude in her address, said that, the purpose of the program is to equip the participants with knowledge, values, and skills. She challenged the girls to become peer educators and impact the knowledge they have acquired at the camp to their colleagues in their schools.
The focal person for the project, Frank Ayisi said the essence of the project is to develop the interest of the girls in Math and Science related courses.
He added that, the project is only taking place in the Eastern and Central Regions of Ghana.
