The Ghana Inshore Fisheries Association is fighting the integration of the ministries of fisheries and agriculture.

A member of the National Fisheries Association of Ghana (NAFAG), the Ghana Inshore Fisheries Organization, has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to rethink any attempts to merge the Ministry of Fisheries and the Ministry of Agriculture.

This follows rumors that President Akufo-Addo plans to combine certain ministries with others while forming his new government.

During the President’s second term, several ministries are also rumoured to be abolished.

The Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Fisheries have been chosen to be among the ministries to be combined by the President.

According to the Inshore Fisheries representatives, however, the merger will not boost the ministry’s situation.

Joseph Nii Armah, President of the Inshore Fisheries Association, noted that the fisheries sector is already facing serious problems that require a single ministry and a serious minister to tackle them.

Therefore, the members of the Association rejected the merger decision, as it would doom the fishing industry.
