6 armed robbers arrested, five others killed in gun battle with Police

Operatives of the Ghana Police Service have gunned down five armed robbers in a gun battle, with six others arrested.

According to a statement by the law enforcement agency on Thursday, Jan. 6 2022, the five were killed during a series of special Anti-Robbery intelligence-led operations carried out throughout the country in the past 48 hours.

The Police further revealed that similar operations are being undertaken in various parts of the country, including the Northern and Western North Regions.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has ordered the immediate interdiction of five police officers for allegedly extorting 500 cedis from a driver after reportedly planting marijuana (weed) in his car.

This incident came to light after the driver who gave his name as Taminu Yahaya was seen in a viral video summoning the police officers to a River god.

Narrating his ordeal, the driver said that on January 2, 2022, he was heading to Asaamankese to buy car tyres when he was stopped by a police patrol team to conduct a search.

According to him, they planted the illicit substance in his car and accused him of attempting to conceal it in the back seat of his car. The driver said he denied the accusation but the ruthless wouldn’t listen.

They handcuffed him, assaulted him and demanded 500 cedis from him before letting go.

9 Minning Firm Robbers Arrested At Enchi

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad attached to the Enchi District Police Command through an intelligence-led operation on Thursday, December 23, 2021 arrested nine suspected armed robbers who launched attack on a mining firm at Enchi in the Western North Region

The nine suspects are Kweku Larry aged 48 years, Morro Gabri aged 34 years, Sulley Adongo aged 32 years, Sem Anthony alias Attah aged 31 years, Mohammed Issah aged 30 years, Solomon Mensah aged 28 years, Tahiru Fatau aged 27 years, Kwame Kunsoro aged 25 years and Kofi Lale aged 18 years.

The Police report indicates that on Monday, December 20, 2021, suspects Sem Anthony and Kweku Larry in the company of a Chinese national reported at the Enchi Police Station that they had been robbed of their black Pump action gun, an lnfinix Spark 5 mobile phone together with an OPPO cell phone and an unspecified amount of money by a group of armed men at the outskirt of Ankaase about 1330 hours.

Acting on intelligence gathered, the Wenchi District Police Commander together with the Anti-Robbery Squad carried out a targeted special operation on the night of Thursday, December 23, 2021, leading to the arrest of the nine suspects.

Investigations established that suspects Kweku Larry, Tahiru Fatau and Sulley Adongo are security guards at the mining firm and suspect Sem Anthony alias Attah the driver of the miners conspired and masterminded the robbery.

A search on them led to the retrieval of an amount of Four Thousand, Five Hundred Ghana Cedis (GH₵ 4,500.00) which they admitted was part of their share of the booty.

The Anti-Robbery Squad is vigorously pursuing the remaining three suspects currently on the run to face prosecutions.

The Police Administration commends the Enchi District Police Command for their swift response in arresting the robbery suspects.

Police said they are determined to flush out criminals within our communities for peace and security.

IGP storms Zuarungu after armed robbers kill two police officers

The Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, has visited families and colleagues of two officers who met their untimely demise in a shoot-out with armed robbers in Zuarungu in the Bolgatanga East District of the Upper East Region Wednesday night.

Constables Emmanuel Akowuah and Adam Suley are said to have lost their lives as they responded to distress calls of a robbery attack on a shop at the Zuarungu Market.

The robbers upon seeing the police officers on their patrol motorbike shot at them, hitting the fuel tank which exploded and burst into flames.

According to a police situational report, Constable Adam Suley was partially burnt by the flames.

Rifles of the deceased officers are said to have been taken away by the robbers

IGP Akuffo Dampare, in the company of members of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), visited the crime scene on Thursday morning to assess the situation.

He also visited families of the officers and the chief of the area to commiserate with them.

It was an emotional moment as colleague officers could not be consoled as they shed uncontrollable tears when the IGP visited them at post.

He assured the entire residents of Zuarungu and its environs of police protection.

Meanwhile, officials have put an unnamed ransom on the head of the robbers, who are perceived to be of Fulani extraction.

The sitrep announced that an intelligence-led operation to arrest the robbers has been launched.
