Neymar has missed over 50 PSG games through injury

Including other absences, he’s missed 91 since joining the club

Neymar was forced off injured as Paris Saint-Germain beat Saint-Etienne 3-1 in Ligue 1 over the weekend, which is something that French football fans have become used to seeing in his time there.

The Brazilian left the field in tears on a stretcher after a nasty challenge twisted his ankle late on, and it’s not the first time he’s been the victim of such a thing in France.

In 2017/18 – his first season there – Neymar suffered a number of injuries that ruled him out. He missed three months that year after a bad challenge, and in January 2019 he suffered another injury that ruled him out for 85 days.

2017/18

Neymar missed his first game at PSG due to a minor injury in the seventh round of Ligue 1, with his side drawing 0-0 against Montpellier. On Matchday 12 he missed out again, and again on Matchday 20. Neymar then returned, but a thigh issue saw him out after just one game back.

In all, he missed 12 Ligue 1 games that season, three in the Coupe de France, the Coupe de la Ligue final, and the second leg of the Champions League last-16 tie against Real Madrid, missing 21 games in his first season in France.

2018/19

Neymar‘s second season wasn’t any better. Another metatarsal injury left him out for a significant part of the campaign despite getting off to a good start.

He suffered discomfort on Matchday 14 and 16 and returned in Matchday 21. That’s when his metatarsal struck once more, seeing him miss 13 Ligue 1 games, and the last 16 in the Champions League. That metatarsal injury saw Neymar out of 18 games in all competitions.

He then missed the Copa America with Brazil, which they ended up winning in his absence.

In all, Neymar missed 24 club games with injuries that season, and three more from being rested, totalling at 45 games out through injury and 48 altogether.

2019/20

This season was a bizarre one due to the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Ligue 1 was one of the first to close its stadiums to the public before eventually calling an end on the season.

Neymar missed two Champions League group-stage games and four in Ligue 1.

Beyond that, he featured in most. A rib injury saw him out of Matchdays 23, 24, and 25, as well as the Coupe de France quarter-finals.

In all, Neymar missed 10 games that season to take his total to 55. Other reasons take the total to 62.

2020/21

This wasn’t a great season for Neymar, but he was able to play most of PSG‘s more important games.

He missed four Champions League games, most crucially PSG‘s date with his former club, Barcelona.

He missed Matchday 2 in Ligue 1 after testing positive for COVID-19 and also Matchdays 9 and 10. A little later in the season and ankle issue saw him miss five games on two occasions.

In total, Neymar missed 18 PSG games in injuries. His injury-related games missed jumped to 73, and other reasons took the total to 82.

2021/22

This season started badly as he missed the first three Ligue 1 games, but has played almost everything since.

Neymar‘s total now stands at 74 games missed through injury, and 91 when all factors are considered other than suspensions.
