Since the entry into force of the Fourth Republic in January 1993, for the full two terms of the President, no finance minister has served in office. Will Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta, the immediate past minister, be the exception?
Mr Ofori-Atta, an economist and investment banker, made his name in the private sector before his retirement in February 2012. He then devoted his all to the election bid of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the then nominee, and his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The co-founder of Databank Financial Services and a Henry Crown Fellow, now in government as the eighth finance minister since 1993, could crack the country’s unwritten code that has seen new faces join the ministry as political leaders in almost every new presidential term.
