The Police MTTD unit has arrested some 10 drivers in the Western Area for bringing bogus motor vehicle insurance on their cars.
The development comes after a routine road check exercise was performed by the National Insurance Commission (NIC) in coordination with the Ghana Police’s Motor Transport and Traffic Division.
Justice Peprah Agyei, the NIC’s Western Regional Manager, told the B&FT Newspaper the exercise was performed over the negligence of most road users who mostly bear fake motor insurance.
“Others drive with fake stickers for auto insurance. The number of people who have suffered from a car accident with false motor insurance or uninsured vehicles can not be counted,” he said.”
A motor accident has caused people to lose parents, children, siblings and other relatives. Where are these persons going to get compensation from? ” Stressed Peprah Agyei.
Furthermore, he said, ‘third-party motor insurance cover shall be paid on behalf of the insured or the driver in respect of third-party civil responsibility arising from an accident caused by his or her car.’
He therefore advised all road users to buy from approved insurance providers and firms accredited insurance stickers and policies.
Over 100 cars were inspected for the drill, out of which 10 drivers were arrested.
